”Unagi” (eel) is good food to digest in the high protein, and it is one of the important dishes that need it in our summer in Japan. Especially, from July 19 to August 7 is “Mid summer day  of the ox”, and these days we have habit of eating eels. The Unagi in Tokyo has long history from Edo period. If you heard of Edo, yes it is a period that a lot of people are wearing kimono and have topknot hairstyle!

 

This time, we would like to introduce the well-established stores of Unagi that everyone loves for long period of time. It is the places where we want you to have, even it is little bit expensive to eat,  if you come to Tokyo.

Unagi Kappo Izuei Main Restaurant

First, we want to introduce the restaurant called,”Izuei”, a 5 min walk from JR Ueno Station.This store established from mid Edo period.

 

To have delicious Unagi, there are three major important elements;  which is ”Tear”, “Skewer”, and “Grill.”  There is also words for this, “To tear for 3 years, skewer for 8 years, grill forever.”  As you see this words, to grill is the most hardest than others. Izuei provides a plump texture of Unagi with a grilled techniques that has been cultivated among the years!

Nodaiwa 

 

Nodaiwa was established about 200 years ago, the time 11th shogun, Ienari Tokugawa was holding the power in Edo period.

From that time, Nodaiwa always provides people the best Unagi, in over the long period of history. They have been protected their traditional taste and techniques till now by “Stick to thorough ingredients” and “Cooking spare no pain.” Nodaiwa is also received the certification as one of the Michelin restaurant in 2016!

Oedo

Oedo is the well established restaurant, a lot of foodies loved since the founder Soukaya, Kichibei set up the land in Edo till now (1800 years).

There is secret popular dish that they provides only on Saturday, which is “Ikada.” "Ikada" is the cooking methods that will not cut it eel in half,  and can have it as a luxurious cuisine.

Myojinshita Kandagawa 

 

At last, we want to introduce, Myojinshita Kadagawa. This restaurant also have long history, it has been established in 1805. You can feel the retro atmosphere from the exterior of this restaurant.  The interior has quiet atmosphere with  wooden building, you will forget that you are in the middle of Tokyo. The Unagi here is carefully selected from Hamamatsu, Yaizu, Shikoku, Kyushu prefectures, and all over Japan. Moreover, this restaurant is particular about the Unagi sauce ( Tare). From since they established, they protect this traditional sauce for long years. The customers can able to taste the traditional flavor that have not changed till now.
