How To Purchace And Use Suica?

05/11/2016

First of all, I would like to give you some information about IC cards(train pass) in Japan. As you can see below, there are ten major IC cards in different prefectures.

Area IC Card
JR Hokkaido area Kitaca
Tokyo Pasmo
JR Eastern Japan Suica
JR Western Japan ICOCA
Nagoya Manaca
JR Central Japan TOICA
Kansai area PiTaPaPA
Western Japan Railway Nimoca
Fukuoka Hayakaken
JR Kyushu Sugoca

In fact, they are compatible with each other so basically you can buy a single of these cards,  and can travel any Japan cities with just one card.

For your reference, the picture below is the areas where Suica can be used. Suica is the most popular IC card in Japan, can able to purchase in Eastern Japan.

How to buy  Suica?

Suica can buy at the Multifunction Ticket Vending Machines or JR Ticket Offices in JR Eastern Japan Station (Tokyo, Sendai Area, Niigata Area). First, you need to pay 500 yen for the initial deposit. There are two types of Suica, “My Suica” and “Suica”. "My Suica" need to provide your personal information including your name, sex, phone number and date of birth. The advantage of getting  “My Suica” is if you lose it, you can able to find it easily. However, if you don`t want to provide your personal information, we will recommend you to purchase,"Suica."

What is more, if you want to reissue your IC card,  the amount of the old suica can be transferred to the new card (500 yen for the initial deposit and 500 yen for fee, 1,000 yen in total will be charged).

What is ticket office?

Ticket office is located near the Multifunction Ticket Vending Machines. They provide JR tickets and sightseeing information.

How to buy Suica at Multifunction Ticket Vending Machines:

1.Find a Multifunction Ticket Vending Machines with the sign “発売中”. The picture below is an example:

2.Please touch the “English” button on the upper right corner.

3.Please touch “Purchase new Suica”

4.Choose “My Suica” or “Suica”

5.If you touch "My Suica",  “Management of personal information” will pop up. Please touch,"Confirm."

6.Enter your personal information and click “OK”  to confirm.

Please select the charge amount. Amount can put it  from 1,000 yen to 10,000yen (Some  machines supports low charge amount from 500 yen). Please have in mind that initial deposit (500 yen) will be deducted from your card, and rest will be transfer to your card.

Insert your money and DONE!

It will be simpler if you choose “Sucia”. You just need to choose the charge amount and insert you money, and DONE! (The charging process is same as “My Suica”)

You can add your values to your Suica at covenience stores such as, Seven-eleven, Daily Yamasaki, Family Mart, Mini Shop, Lawson, Aeon, and  etc. It is a good choice to add your values at those places,  if you are not familiar how to charge using the Multifunction Ticket Vending Machines.
