Gokokuji
Gokokuji temple is part of the Buzan Sect of Shingon Buddhism, located in Otsuka in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.
It was built by the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, in 1681 by the desire of his birthing mother, Keishoin. The temple has many historical buildings ranging from Edo period constructions to more modern buildings constructed in 1930.
The main building and Gekkou-den are designated as Important Cultural Properties. The main building was constructed in 1681 followed by a major renovation in 1697, and it continues to stand until now to tell the story of Genroku period (1688-1704) after surviving through fire and earthquakes on two occasions and wars.
It is worth a visit to take a look to its majestic exterior as well as detailed architectural designs.
The visitors can also enter the main building. Other artifacts in the temple include Otowa Fuji, which is an artificially built mound to represent Fuji Mountain, and a giant Buddha, which is rare in Tokyo.
Within the temple, there is a cemetery where Yamagata Arimoto, Okuma Shigenobu and other notable people were laid to rest.
