Lets Enjoy Hot Pots in a Freezing Days! The Best 3 Long-established Specialty Restaurants in Tokyo That Has Been Loved by Japanese!

01/19/2018

What do you describe, if you think of winter? Skiing, snowboarding, snow etc…? How about food? I assume most people like to have hot pots in a cold freezing days. In Japan you can have various hot pots depending on the prefectures. Such as Kiritampo from Akita, Houtou from Yamanashi, Mizutaki from Fukuoka and so on. Today, I want to introduce 3 recommended hot pot places in Tokyo you must visit!

Long-established Restaurant  From Meiji Era  “Yonekyu Asakusa"

The “Yonekyu Asakusa” was established in 1886. Here is the place to eat Gyu-nabe (Beef hot pot)  with reasonable price! When you entered Noren (shop curtain), the staff will first welcome you with a sound of taiko(Japanese drum). It seems that the number of time they hits the taiko is depends on the number of guests. You can enjoy Gyu-nabe in traditional Japanese house as well as experience the Japanese hospitality in a same time. ※ Gyu-nabe is similar to sukiyaki, but the ingredients is different.  Only contains meat and vegetables.

They only have “Toku no Gyu-nabe” (3790 yen per person) and “Ue no Gyu-nabe” (3160 yen per person) on the menu. Please choose which beef you prefer, and onto that vegetables and raw egg will be included. This set menu, the miso soup, pickles and rice can be added as extra charge of 320 yen each.

The meat they are providing for “Ue no Gyu-nabe” is amazing! It can tell how good the quality is in this price! The “Toku no Gyu-nabe”  is more fatty than this. They are using Wagyu Omi beef for hot pot, it is soft and will melts when you bring it to your mouth. I can say wagyu beef is awesome than any other beef in the world! Please have it with raw eggs as you like.

"Tamahide"  is a chicken specialty restaurant established since 1760. The appearance is like a castle you see in Edo era. This shop was a model of the chicken restaurant, "Gotetsu” that appears in the famous Edo era drama, "Onihei Hankacho" , by Professor Shotaro Ikenami. It is also known as a first restaurant made Oyako-don. A lot of visitors come here and queque to have this 4 different Oyako-don they offer, and will be first come first serve. When you entered the restaurant, at first you need to pay at the reception desk and dine in.

They are using Shamo chicken. The chicken omelet mixed with Dashi (broth) is soft and have excellent taste!  ※Shamo Chicken:Brand chickens produced in Tokyo, and it is said to be healthy and low fat.

You need to queue at lunch time, if you are having just Oyako-don. For lunch course, the line is different, so you may can enter more smoother. The lunch course menu also provide Oyako-don, so maybe for those who do not have time, how about choosing a course instead?.

Providing Shamo Hot Pot Course in Dinner

For dinner, they offer “Shamo Suki course” and “Shamo Mizutaki course.” The chicken used for "Shamo Suki" are chicken skin, tsukune(chicken meatball), legs and breast meat. The chicken is very chewy and you may do not have opportunity to eat chicken Sukiyaki. For those who are always eating with beef, please try it once! The appearance is dark brown Japanese traditional house, there is counter near to the entrance and few tables in the living room.

On the menu, they only provide their signature Chanko (2900 yen), Tsukune, and Yakitori. Here you can eat is "Soppu Taki" style Chanko, which  keeps protecting from the foundation and does not changed.  ※ "Soppu Taki" is one of the way to cook Chanko. They cooked the fresh chicken for 6 hours, and add soy sauce to the soup. The ingredients for Chanko are chicken legs, chicken gizzard, liver, and plenty of vegetables. You will be satisfied with the excellent, smooth light taste broth!!
