Ueno Onshi Park (Ueno Park)
Ueno Onshi Park is a park located in Taito Ward of the Tokyo Prefecture. It is commonly known as Ueno Park. It is also called, "Ueno's forest." Since the park is located on "Uenodai," which is a ligulate plateau of the Musashino Plateau ends, it is also called "Ueno's hill." Its total area is approximately 530,000 square meters.
In the park there are various cultural facilities, such as museums and a zoo. "Ueno-koen (which means Ueno Park)" is also the town name of the Taito Ward. In 1870, the Dutch doctor Bauduin inspected the hill of Ueno as the planned site of a medical school and hospital, and worked on the Japanese government to leave the place as a park. Later in 1873, it was designated as Japan's first park. In the park grounds, cultural facilities are intensively located.
For example Tokyo National Museum, The National Museum of Western Art, National Museum of Nature and Science, and Ueno Zoo. From the early modern times, it has become a famous place for cherry blossoms, and is selected as one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom locations. During the flowering time of the cherry blossoms, it is famous that numerous cherry blossom viewers surge. Also in the summer, parts of the Shinobazu-no-ike (pond) are covered with lotuses and the sheet of green and peach-colored lotus flowers are beautiful.
