Sensoji Temple
Senso Ji was constructed in 628, the oldest temple in Tokyo.
It is often called, "Asakusa Kannon" by many people. The temple was designated as the official temple of the military government (the shogunate regime) by Tokugawa Ieyasu in Edo period, and it is now visited by 30million people each year. It comes to show how the temple continued to be visited faithfully in the past and now.
The area was also the heart of Edo culture, and their remnants still remains everywhere. There are many events organised for each season such as Hozuki (chinese lantern plant) market and Hagoita market. Within the temple are the main building of the temple, as well as Important Cultural Properties such as Nitenmon-gate, Hozoumon wherer treasures are kept, and Gojyunotou
(five tier pagoda).
There is also Senso Jinja Shrine, "the Asakusa Three Temple festival", which is one the three biggest festivals in Edo, honors this shrine.
The large red lantern at Kaminarimon-gate is the face of Asakusa, and the shopping street on Nakamise that stretches from the main gate to the temple has a long history dating back to Edo period.
